24 Nov Risk Taking in your Artwork
Hello everyone!!
Today, I wanted to talk about Risk taking … be it in life or in our ‘ART’!
So, before I talk about my ideas of taking risks in our personal art practice, I would really like to know about yours too. Would you like to put in your comments as to what it means for you to take a risk in your ART??
Well friends, it can be a rewarding and exciting way to explore new creative possibilities. Here are some ways that help me shuffle feathers in my own artistic journey, which you can also apply in your own work.
- Experiment with New Materials:
- Choose art materials you’ve never used before. It might include unconventional tools, unique paper, or experimental mediums. For example, try incorporating found objects into your work or objects from nature around you.
- Combine Different Medium:
- Mix different art medium in a single piece. Combining painting, drawing, collage, or digital elements can lead to unexpected and interesting results.

- Change Your Scale:
- If you usually work on a small scale, try creating a larger piece, or vice versa. Changing the size of your canvas can alter the dynamics of your creative process.

- Explore Abstract Concepts:
- Move away from representational art and explore abstract concepts. Use shapes, lines, and colors to evoke emotions or ideas without a clear narrative. Or if you already are an abstract painter, try something new. such as photo realism or even capture still life through live art setup.
- Work with a Limited Palette:
- Challenge yourself by using a restricted color palette. This can force you to focus on composition, form, and contrast in new ways.

- Adopt a New Technique:
- Get in applying an entirely new art technique or process. It could be a new way of applying paint such a drip painting or come up with a heavy textured surface, i.e. impasto technique or experimenting with digital tools. Adopting a new technique can open up fresh possibilities and also make us ready for any accidental random unique outcomes.
- Draw Inspiration from Other Art Forms:
- Perhaps you can combine other art forms, such as literature, music, poetry or dance. This will inspire you enough to express your emotions and bring out a new unexplored theme into your visual art. This approach can help you collaborate with other artists or even non-artists as well to further push your boundaries and give you a fresh perspective into your work.
- Don’t forget to document Your Process:
-
- Keep a journal to record your new creative process. It will later on help to reflect on your creative thoughts and the hard unusual decisions that you had to make and how you identified with them.

It is imperative to remind ourselves during risk taking in our art, that not every artwork will be a masterpiece. It need not be!! whereas the idea of risk taking is only to grow more in our practice and become as fearless as possible as we all learn from our mistakes.
You never know what you might discover during this artistic expression that will change course of your art journey for good! If this is the case then do not hesitate to incorporate those changes in your artwork as soon as possible. it will open new doors for you.
Please share your own stories of when you have come up with something entirely new that made a huge difference in your art practice.
Till next time!! Peace & Creativity 🙂
